So the first and part of the second wave of free agency have been completed with some surprising and some not so shocking moves. Where to begin? How about with a huge debate that's brewing in the NFL about Matt Cassel. Talks of him before preseason made it out to be that he could be the savior of many franchises in need. The guy has one year of production, guess who else did. Remember the supposed second coming of Joe Montana? A guy by the name of Rick Mirer turned out to be nothing more than a bust. Now seeing as the the NFL is the epitome of bandwagonism if there is such a term, we are lead to believe Cassel is the next Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. Lets break it down though. A cheater or not(we'll get to that later)Bill Belichick is a good coach, in that he doesn't put his players in position to fail. Matt Cassel was playing behind a fantastic offensive line which had been playing together for years. He had weapons such as Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Ben Watson, and Kevin Faulk. He had a decent defense that didn't require him to win the game much like Joe Flacco in Baltimore, but not quite that good of a D. So because Belichick doesn't make his rookie win the game, he is considered a good quarterback with over 3,600 yards passing and 21-11 touchdown to interception ratio. I'm not saying he's a bust, but I also don't think he's Godsend and going to be the answer for a franchise. Now onto the debate at hand which is quickly being looked at as another Spygate, which to those of you don't know is a previous scandal that Bill Belichick was accused of a few years ago. Videos and information came up that the Patriots' Super Bowl Victories were tainted in that they taped practices of opponents to gain an edge. But we're not talking about that, we're talking about whether or not Bill Belichick gave his old buddy/former GM/new and current GM of the Kansas City Chiefs, Scott Pioli. Speculation that Belichick gave Pioli a discount of sorts when it came to acquiring Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel for the low price of a 2nd round pick in this years upcoming draft have arisen. Whether or not they are true, think about what it would cost to trade for someone like Matt Ryan with the success he had this year. Not only for acquiring him, but a defensive captain and leader of a locker room also for a 2nd round pick. It just seems a little cheap, because it was to my understanding that acquiring a franchised player, which is what Cassel was, required the buying team to trade a 1st and 3rd or two 1st round picks. I don't understand why the Pats didn't get as much as they could for a guy like Cassel who was held in such high regard. Especially when you have the former MVP coming back this year. And if you are going to give up your insurance policy, it better be worth your while, not a measly 2nd round pick.

Now onto more intriguing topics. Albert Hayneswoth officially became the NFL's highest paid defensive player in it's history by receiving a 7 year $100 million contract from the Washington Redskins. So now begins the tidal wave that will be starting point for players next off season. Now that that amount of money is a very real possibility, players will be looking to be paid that kind of money based on their production during this upcoming season. D Hall signed a 6 year deal with the team earlier that day to show once again that the Skins would pay anyone anything if they want them. I'm not saying that Haynesworth won't improve that dreadful defensive line, but they just cut Jason Taylor. Big Al would've opened some holes for Jason Taylor, so you would think that Washington and Dan Snyder would be willing to do what was needed to retain him. Doesn't make any sense to me, but I guess that's why I can only write about it and not actually do it right? The Jets have made quite the splash with Rex Ryan leading the way. He began by bringing in a defensive leader and play maker in Bart Scott who was in my opinion the second best defensive player on the market. He was tutored under future hall of famer Ray Lewis. Ryan also brought safety Jim Leonhard, who I thought filled in quite nicely in Dawan Landry's absence, is a solid safety and also a threat in the return game. NY has Leon Washington so I think they're fine there, but they did make a very good move that I was wondering why someone hadn't earlier in the season. That move being a trade for now underrated corner Lito Sheppard. A former Pro Bowl corner was ousted and practically forgotten about after superstar free agent corner Asante Samuel was signed last off season. Now the Jets have a blueprint for what should be a dynamic defense next season. Think of who they have right now. Kris Jenkins, Darrelle Revis, Lito Sheppard, David Harris, Kerry Rhodes, and Vernon Gholston who had a phenomenal combine last year and didn't live anywhere near expectations for this year. He is physically gifted, and maybe with Scott and Ryan both teaching and working with him, we could see a very special player arise within the next few seasons. They have a solid offensive line, a 2 headed monster at running back. Thomas Jones to wear them down and Washington to break the big run. The Jets will make the playoffs next year.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh landed in Seattle when many thought and I'm sure, many hoped, he would land with the Eagles and help lead them to the next level. Seattle is on the verge of rebuilding on offense, and that won't help win a championship. Matt Hasselbeck is 34 in September, they have no running game, and an aging offensive line. Their defense consists of Lofa Tatupu, Leroy Hill, Marcus Trufant, and that's about it. I think this was a big mistake for T.J.. Tennessee added rising defensive star Jovan Haye, and mistake Nate Washington. Nate played in PGH where I could watch his famed inconsistency in all it's glory. For some reason, he was a prized free agent, but again, I guess that's why I'm only a writer. I would've pursued a wide receiver such as Laveranues Coles. Tampa Bay on the other hand made a great move I thought in trading for Kellen Winslow in what proves to be Mangini's magic. Rumors are circulating that Braylon Edwards is the target of some more trade talks. Shaun Rogers has made it apparent that he wants out of Cleveland after a brief stint. Derek Anderson's name has come up in many trade discussions with team's looking for quarterbacks much like Matt Cassel. Derrick Ward ended up in Tampa as well adding to a run game in much need of a supporting cast. Teamed with Earnest Graham and whomever they might draft this year, Ward can be productive behind a decent offensive line and could be relied on heavily as it appears Luke McCown will be the starter. Since creating cap room, Tampa lost in the Haynesworth sweepstakes, so watch for them to remain active in the coming weeks. Baltimore has reportedly been in contact former left tackle for the World Champion Steelers Marvel Smith and former Vikings' Pro Bowl center Matt Birk as they search to fill the void of Jason Brown. Speaking of the Steelers, they have been as predicted very quiet in free agency, and only had one resigning. Cincinnati made the right decision in resigning Cedric Benson who showed partly why he was drafted so high all those years ago. Other than that people, there's not much more than minor signings or huge trades ahead of us, not to mention Michael Vick's future.

NFL Offeason 2009

This could be the year a few impact players take teams to the next level. The draft is filled with talent this year and certain veteran players are aging without a championship. Players like Tony Gonzalez could end up in a place like New England, to give Tom Brady yet another target. Larry Johnson also wants out of KC, and boy what a perfect fit he would be for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He brings that sense of smash mouth running that the Steel City has lacked since the Bettis years. Remember that? I mean, how often do you have a player that is a guarantee touchdown inside the 5 yard line. Although that's highly improbable, seeing as how the Steelers used a first round pick on Mendenhall last year, not too mention Willie Parker. I had mentioned in a previous article though that Jordan Gross would make a perfect fit for the Steelers because of his athleticism.

Rumor has it that Chicago is interested in wide receiver Torry Holt which would definitely help a much needed threat at wide receiver. Devin Hester hasn't been quite the huge boost to the offense they had hoped, so look for them to make a move here within the next week or so.

Michael Vick is due out of prison in July and the Falcons are already shopping him. While most of us can imagine him ending up with Dallas or Oakland, don't be surprised if other teams in need of an offensive spark make a move. Obviously they'll have to sign him for very little, and that would happen only if Atlanta released him, which surely won't happen. Of course he's a public relations nightmare with his connection to illegal dog fighting, who would want that in the organization? Oakland or Dallas, the only two teams who think they can fix misguided players. "Pacman" Jones in Oakland next season? I however can see a team like Minnesota, with their run happy offense, making a move for Vick. John Clayton of ESPN thinks the St. Louis Rams or even the 49ers could be possible destinations for Vick. The Miami Dolphins brought about a new offense this past season known as "Wildcat". Vick would be fantastic in a Wildcat offense for his running and throwing ability. He hasn't played since the 2006 season but I'm sure he'll pick up right where he left off. I was a big Vick supporter before all of this, and lord knows I love my dog, but I can see me being a Vick fan again, who knows?

Julius Peppers has made it clear he wants out of Carolina and is looking for big money. Rumors of a $100 million dollar contract are drifting around the NFL due to his versatility. Albert Haynesworth, also reportedly is looking for that amount of money and has been flirting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He would be a nice fit for any team, and is the type of player you build a team around. He'll be 28 heading into training camp so he has another 7 good years. Julius Peppers, to me, would be a great fit for just about any defense, but would be especially nice for a team that knows how to use his full potential. A team like the New York Jets, with Rex Ryan leading the defense could be a possible destination. Teams like the 49ers, Patriots, Steelers, Ravens, Broncos, and Vikings would all be great potential homes for Peppers, even though some are highly unlikely.

Anquan Boldin, and T.J. Houshmandzadeh are two players that could take teams to the next level with some help. A team like the Eagles would be a nice fit for either of these players because Donovan lacks an elite receiving threat. Don't get me wrong, DeSean Jackson shows some potential with his big play ability. Remember how well McNabb did the year they signed Terrell Owens? Super Bowl? This Eagles team is better, and with one these players, could be an elite team. I think the 49ers are another team on the verge of something great. They of course are in need of a quarterback or at least some consistency. Don't start by calling Alex Smith a bust, I personally think he has some potential, but just hasn't had the right opportunity. If he had a threat at wide receiver it would help the offense all together. It would help Vernon Davis on the underneath routes en route to becoming the dominant force people thought he could be. It would help open up running game for Frank Gore. And all of this could happen with just the addition of a serious threat at wide receiver.

Bart Scott is almost a surefire free agent, seeing as how he is the odd man out in Baltimore. A great linebacker yes, but he is not the leader Lewis is, nor the talent Suggs is. Look for Scott to solidify a team in need of a linebacker such as the Denver Broncos or even division rival Cincinnati. Dunta Robinson from Houston might be an option for a team struggling in the secondary. Plagued with injuries during his brief career, he hasn't quite turned out to be the shutdown corner the Texans had hoped. A team like Detroit could be a destination with new defensive minded coach Jim Schwartz at the helm. Rumors still circulate of Kurt Warner's destination. for next season, but what's it matter? The guy is 38 years old. Its going to be a repeat of this past season with Favre. Started out playing great and young again, and ended with him showing his age. Kurt Warner had his chance to do something great, and he did, he led a nobody team the Super Bowl, only to watch his defense lose it for him. He was a great quarterback but he's nothing more than a mentor for some young up and comer now. Kerry Collins and Jeff Garcia are both free agents with barely a year left in their arms. These quarterbacks are looking to start, but with their age and lack of arm strength, it's not even worth investing the money in them. They'd be best off either playing for a run first team if their lucky, if not mentoring is the way to go.

Teams with aging star players, that are in the rebuilding process, could be the key to other teams' success. By trading these players, they can lay the foundation for a run at the title. This should shape up to be a very exciting year. Will we see another team rise up from obscurity, or will the favored teams of past reassert their dominance? Time will tell, for now we can only speculate...

NFL Super Bowl: Referees

When will it end? When will the day come where we can watch a football game that isn’t ruined by the referees? I just finished watching the Super Bowl and I have come to the conclusion that the answer to my question is never. It’s not enough we have to watch Ben Roethlesberger bounce around in the pocket like a jumping bean. But do we really have to watch these referees direct momentum the whole game. It seemed like every time the Cardinals started to get back into the game there would be some call that would take their chances away. Maybe I’m crazy, but when I saw that roughing the passer call on Roethlesberger, I started to question, like I have more and more over the years, “Is what I’m watching real or is the NFL turning into the WWE?” Then the catch in the end zone wasn’t overturned. It was a fantastic play by the receiver, but his right foot never touched the ground. As I was watching the replay over and over again, I thought to myself, “Oh, he clearly didn’t get his right foot down.” They kept showing me his right foot on top of his left. “They’ll overturn the call.” I thought. But then I hear John Madden saying over and over again, “Yep, both feet down, that’s a catch, that’s a touchdown.” Was I the only one who was seeing the receiver’s right foot not touching the ground? I mean it was a close call, but Roethlesberger, Holmes, and the entire Steelers team were already celebrating. Maybe the referees were just going with the flow. Maybe they decided it was a catch before they even saw the play. This is wrong. Figure out what actually happened first, then make the call, not the other way around. So I thought that the game was over. There was about thirty seconds left on the clock and the Cardinals had to drive 85 yards. Not impossible, but it would probably take a Hail Mary at some point. Well it came down to exactly that. Only Kurt Warner was forced to buy some time and was hit as he attempted to make the throw. During the throw he was hit in his throwing arm but was still able to push the ball out. The tuck rule, which is still a rule if I’m not mistaken, was perfectly displayed in this play. Now when this happened I thought, “well, at least he got the ball out and he’ll get another chance to make a play.” Even when I saw the Steelers dive on the ball like it was a fumble, I thought, “Dead ball, come on refs make the right call.” They made no call. They let the Steelers have possession and the next thing I know Roethlesberger is kneeling on the ball. Game over. Come on guys. Not even a review. You’re going to let the Super Bowl end with something like that? Look, I love football; it’s by far my favorite sport to watch and to play, and I’m happy for the Steelers, They played a great game. But they too were one of many who were cheated in this game. The NFL is getting more and more ridiculous every year and the blatant ignorance to the rules at times is just painful to watch. After this year’s Super Bowl I want to say it can’t get any worse, but I know I’d be Lying.

NFL HOF: Warner a Sure Fire Hall of Famer

With the Pittsburgh Steelers victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, Steelers’ wide receiver Santonio Holmes walked away with the games Most Valuable Player, but Kurt Warner walked away with the most important award before the game even started. The Walter Payton Man of the Year award is given out to honor a player’s volunteer and charity work as well as excellence on the field.

This year, Kurt Warner finished second in the league in passing yards, completion percentage, and also threw for 30 touchdowns. His off field heroics, however, are what matter most. In 2001 Warner set up the First Things First Foundation, and contributed more than $1.5 million of his own money to fund trips for Make-A-Wish families, build homes for underprivileged families and Punt, Pass and Kick clinics with Special Olympians.Once the Super Bowl got underway, Warner played brilliantly. Questions of his Hall of Fame worth emerged after Warner almost had his Cardinals upsetting the heavily favored Steelers in the Super Bowl. Those questions have a myriad of answers: absolutely, definitely, positively, and without doubt. To sum that up, yes.

Warner led the Rams to a Super Bowl victory in 2000 over the Tennessee Titans, and then two years later brought them back to face the Patriots only to lose on a last second Vinatieri field goal. With this being his third Super Bowl start, one name comes to mind for comparison purposes: Buffalo Bills’ Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly. Judging by Warner’s Super Bowl appearances alone, his chances of being nominated to the Hall of Fame are decent, but if you take a closer look, Warner is an obvious choice for the Hall.

At this point in time, both quarterbacks played in the NFL for 10 seasons: Kelly from 1986 to 1996, and Warner from 1998 to 2008. Kelly did lead his Bills to an unprecedented four consecutive Super Bowl appearances, only to lose all of them. Warner has been to three, and has won one, while playing like a true MVP in all three.

In Kelly’s ten seasons, he played 14 games or more eight times, compared to Warner’s four times. In his career, Kelly played a total of 160 games, whereas Warner only played 110. Kelly has thrown for 35,467 yards in his career, and despite playing 50 less games, Warner has thrown for 28,591 yards, which is 6,876 less than Kelly (or in Warner’s world, a little less than 2 seasons worth of yards). If you take Warner’s career average of 259.9 yards per game, once Warner hits his 160th game, his total would skyrocket to 41,586 yards for his career.

During Kelly’s time in Buffalo, he threw for 30 touchdowns only once, in 1991. Warner has accomplished that feat three times, and throwing for 41 touchdowns back in 1999. Warner is also a more accurate passer, completing 65.4 % of his passes, compared to 60.1 % for Kelly. If you take Warner’s career averages and factor in him playing 160 games, his totals would be better than Kelly’s in every aspect. Warner would throw 264 touchdown passes to Kelly’s 237, and Warner would throw less interceptions, 165 to Kelly’s 175. Warner would also have over 6,000 more passing yards than Kelly as well.

One final point is this: When Jim Kelly was 37 years old, he was partaking in his first season as a retired professional football player. At 37, Warner was busy throwing for 4,583 yards, 30 touchdowns during the regular season, and leading his team against the vaunted Steelers defense while throwing for 377 yards, three touchdowns, all while completing 72% of his passes.

Warner is a definitely a Hall of Famer. His stats and off field contributions back him up as well as his Super Bowl ring. Even in defeat, he plays valiantly. Still not convinced? Warner has thrown for more yards in Super Bowl games than the great Joe Montana (1,156 to Montana’s 1,142), even though Montana played in four Super Bowls compared to Kurt’s three. As you can clearly see, Kurt Warner definitely has what it takes to get into Canton.

NFL Playoffs 2008: Arizona Cardinals Recap

After making their first appearance in an NFC Championship game and defeating the Philadelphia Eagles, the Arizona Cardinals are on their way to their very first Super Bowl. Facing a very experienced Pittsburgh Steelers team, the Cardinals have their own experienced personnel, most notably head coach Ken Whisenhunt and quarterback Kurt Warner.

Whisenhunt was the Steelers offensive coordinator for three years under previous coach Bill Cowher, and helped lead them to victory in Super Bowl XL. A notable play call during that game was a touchdown pass from Steelers’ wide receiver Antwaan Randle El to Hines Ward, which is the only touchdown pass thrown by a wide receiver in Super Bowl history. Whisenhunt then took the Cardinals’ head coaching job in 2007, leading the Cards to an 8-8 record (a nice improvement from the previous year’s 5-11 record). At the start of the 2008 season, Whisenhunt made another smart decision, naming Kurt Warner the starting quarterback over Matt Leinart, which provided huge dividends.

Even though Warner ended the 2007 season strongly while filling in for an injured Matt Leinart, he still entered training camp this off season as the backup. After a strong showing in the preseason, he earned the starting nod over Leinart and led the Cardinals to the NFC West Title with a 9-7 record. Warner, who is widely recognized as an even greater man than football player, had a monster season in Arizona, finishing second in the NFL in passing yards with 4,583 and touchdown passes, with 30. He also completed 67.1 % of his passes during the regular season which was also good for second in the NFL. Putting stats aside, Warner’s leadership always gives the Cardinals a chance to win any game. Back in 2000, Kurt led the St. Louis Rams to a Super Bowl win over the Tennessee Titans. Two years later he led them back to the Super Bowl, losing a nail biter to the New England Patriots on a last second field goal by Patriots’ kicker Adam Vinatieri. So far this post season, Warner has done everything he can to get the Cardinals going in the right direction after their late season swoon. In their three playoff games, Warner has thrown for 770 yards and eight touchdown passes to only two interceptions.

The main beneficiary of Warner’s precision passes is Cardinal wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. In three post season games this year, Fitzgerald has caught 23 passes for 419 yards, which is a single post season record, along with five touchdowns. Fitzgerald has been getting the job done without teammate Anquan Boldin, who has missed significant time during the playoffs with a hamstring injury. The former Pitt Panther tore apart the Eagles’ secondary during the NFC Championship game, snaring nine Warner passes for 152 yards and three touchdowns (which tied a playoff record).

The Cardinals will be relying heavily upon their defense to win the Super Bowl. The Cards’ defense has tightened up quite considerably in the post season. During the regular season, they gave up an average of just over 26 points per game. In the playoffs, they have been almost a whole touchdown better, allowing only 20.6 points per game. Their rushing attack has also improved greatly. During the regular season, the Cards averaged 73.6 rushing yards per game, but during the playoffs, they have gained an average of 111 yards per contest. The resurgence of Edgerrin James has sparked their ground attack, and along with rookie Tim Hightower, the Cardinals have found their ground game to help take some pressure off former league and Super Bowl MVP Kurt Warner.

There will be many questions that will be answered in Tampa. One exciting question is can the Cardinals continue their high scoring ways against the number one defense in the NFL? Can their defense stop Ben Roethlisberger and the potent Steeler running attack? Can Larry Fitzgerald continue his record setting pace? Will Kurt Warner lead yet another team to their first Super Bowl win? These answers remain to be seen, but one thing is sure…it will be fun to watch and find out!

Super Bowl XLIII: Cardinals vs. Steelers

Here we are just one week away from Superbowl 43. Not too many people can say they predicted this match-up. The high flying Cardinals passing attack goes against the #1 ranked defense in the NFL.

Keys to the game for both teams. In no particular order.

STEELERS

1. The pass rush of Harrison and Woodley has to get to Warner. They have to put Warner on his back throughout the game and hit him every chance they get.

2.The Steelers have to control the clock by running the ball effectively and keep the Cards passing attack on the sideline.

3. Hines Ward must play in this game, so if and when Big Ben is pressured he can find his go to guy.

4. Unlike the NFC playoff teams, the Steelers must try to press the Cardinal WR’s and force them out off their routes at the line of scrimmage. We have all seen what happens when you allow them to run free after the ball gets snapped.

CARDINALS

1. Can the Cardinals running attack of James & Hightower produce enough yards to keep the Steelers Blitz honest and take some pressure off of Warner?

2. Will Boldin and James put their egos aside for one more game and be team players?

3. Can the Cardinals front four put enough pressure on Big Ben to create turnovers as they have been doing thus far in the Playoffs?

4. They have to play smart and mistake free football for 60 minutes to have a chance to win this game.

NFL Talk: Saving Face on MLK Jr. Day

On this Martin Luther King Jr. day, it’s hard to give a crap about football. Barack Obama is scheduled to take office tomorrow as President of The United States of America, arguably the biggest day in the usually foul history of this country. The radio and news organizations are in man-to-man-to-man-to-man coverage of the day’s events. Dr. King’s voice, speeches from the ugly but hopeful civil rights era, can be heard on NPR. His enchanting oration of how the world can be are still sparking hope in the minds and hearts of those living in these ominous American times.

But these are still important days for America. The outcomes have been weighed and the stakes are high. Barring Obama’s safety at the inauguration tomorrow afternoon, we as a people are poised to make a full and sweeping upswing, hopefully becoming a once-again great nation after these eight or so years of dreadful heartache, fear and failure, uncertainty and preparations for the inevitable apocalypse. The Doomsday Clock is set for five minutes to midnight, and it might just be me, but I think if the board of directors at the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists were football fans, it would be more like three minutes. We have constructed a stage for some of the most dramatic events in US history, not to mention the Super Bowl contenders have been decided, and the NFC representatives are not anyone we expected.

Let me be the first to acknowledge how absolutely flawed my callous championship predictions were yesterday. I must publicly apologize for my crass cockiness. Arizona didn’t win because they got lucky; they didn’t win as a result of penalty calls. The Cardinals won because they performed better than Philadelphia. Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald played some amazing football yesterday afternoon. Warner’s passes were right where they needed to be, and the few times they weren’t, Fitzgerald picked up the slack and made the play happen -- with 152 receiving yards and three (3!) easy first half touchdowns. He will go down in NFL history as one of the league’s best post-season receivers, an athlete among athletes. I’m not sure what this victory means for Kurt Warner as an individual (I imagine Green Bay’s staff are kicking themselves at this point), but this is the first time the Cardinals have made it to the Super Bowl – not in Chicago, not in St. Louis, but in Phoenix. It has finally paid to be a Cardinals fan, the oldest franchise in the NFL (not the Packers).

I don’t even know what to say about the Baltimore/Pittsburgh game. I suppose I was really hoping the Steelers wouldn’t make it to the Super Bowl. For them to go all the way is standard – the seventh time, in fact. But for Baltimore with Joe Flacco at the helm, it would have been a hero story. Flacco is still the only rookie quarterback to win two post-season games which, if he can live up to himself in the future, will make him one of the NFL’s most cherished commodities. In the league right now, with QBs like Flacco, Ryan, the Manning brothers, Warner, Roethlisberger, and even a washed-up vet like Brett Farve still trying to compete, it is a fantastic time to be a football fan. I look forward to next season. But right now, with my failures in sports prediction and the post-season shaped-out the way it has, there is little I can do to make myself feel better. It is what it is.

Mike Tomlin might be the real story, being the youngest coach ever to go to the Big Game at age 36. Just twelve days before February 1st Obama will be inaugurated. And I know this horse has been beaten into bloody oblivion, but this epoch will be distinguished as the best time to be a young black man in America, and I wish both men well. The history being made in the United States, including the NFL is legendary. And as a young white man it’s far beyond my capacity for understanding or analysis. ‘Nuff said.

I’m officially out of the prediction game for now; I’ll stick to transcribing slow-motion replays into dramatic text for the amusement of online readers. Vegas as already posted the spread for the Super Bowl, placing Pittsburgh as the favorite at 6 ½ points. Something I’ve learned this season is that games are not won or lost by stats and figures; the outcomes are not decided by point spreads but by the intoxicating desire to win. Competitive drive isn’t the sum of some formula cooked-up through a series of savvy managerial decisions and free-agent drafts. Hell, even good players can play like crap from time to time (Adrian Peterson?). I guess the real question is who wants it more. Warner and the Cardinals have fought their like outnumbered Greek soldiers through media criticism and statistical skepticism to the spot they are in now, and what kind of sports fan would I be it I didn’t throw my weight behind them?
